V. Norton has lived in the Verde Valley for 25 years and spends her days, and sometimes nights, in her studio surrounded by Sedona’s magical Red Rocks. She draws her inspiration from the native landscape, people and animals to create her ever-evolving masterpieces.
V. has also traveled extensively in Mexico, North and South America, Europe and Africa searching out indigenous artists that create vessels and spirit masks and learning their techniques.
After graduating from UCLA, V. began playing with clay as a hobby that has now become her career. Her favorite clay is porcelain. She uses only lead-free glazes so that her pieces are functional as well as beautiful. She also loves the bright colors of the low-fire glazes for her Raku creations and fantasy platters. Her work includes bowls, vessels, platters, sculpture, handmade beaded jewelry and masks.
V. is also a talented professional calligrapher, with over 30 years’ experience. She loves commissioned work such as personalized, frameable poems, quotes or sayings, wedding invitations and envelopes. She taught calligraphy at the college level for many years and now teaches privately. Merging her love of clay with her calligraphy, she is now using clay as yet another creative medium for her lettering.
